Saturday, June 2, 2012 will be a day of celebration as 20 young Black women of distinction, who are not only scholarly and of high moral character, but who are outstanding and caring individuals, will be presented to society. It is the day of the 61ST annual Owl Club of Denver Debutante Cotillion to be held at the Marriott City Center Hotel, with doors to open at 4:00 p.m. The Debutantes, who will have graduated from high school, and all of whom will attend college in the fall, have achieved award-winning honors from their respective schools, and have made significant contributions to their churches, schools, and to the community at large.
The Owl Club is a men’s social and service organization that focuses on assisting young people to attain their dreams of acquiring higher education with the goal of benefitting their community through the application of their learning. Founded in 1941, the Club has operated continuously since that time to carry out its mission. Its first Debutante Ball was held in 1951 to honor outstanding young, Black women who were not being recognized by other debutante balls. Such outstanding women as former Secretary of State Condolezza Rice, bestselling author J.D. Mason, and nationally known Denver physicians Dr. Terri Richardson and Dr. Renee Cousins, have been Owl Club debutantes in the past, and, with over 1400 other former Debutantes, serve as role models for current Debutantes.
